A-PERUSTUS OY AND METSÄ FIBRE SIGN ANOTHER AGREEMENT FOR THE FUTURE BIOPRODUCT PLANT IN KEMI

A-Perustus Oy ja Metsä Fibre sopimukseen rikkihappolaitoksen ja jätevesipumppaamon paikallavalutöistä Kemin tulevalle biotuotetehtaalle

When completed, Metsä Fibre's Kemi bioproduct mill will be the most efficient wood processing plant in the northern hemisphere. It is the largest investment in the history of the Finnish forest industry, worth EUR 1.6 billion, and will be environmentally, energy and material efficient, operating entirely without fossil fuels. Throughout its direct value chain, the plant will employ around 2 500 people in Finland, of which around 1 500 will be new employees. The Kemi bioproducts plant will increase the value of Finnish exports by half a billion euros annually and will have a positive revenue impact on Finland of half a billion euros annually.

The key to the bioproduct plant is an advanced closed chemical loop, where water and chemicals are recycled and returned to the process for reuse. The waste gases are processed into sulphuric acid, which the plant needs to make, for example, pine oil. The sulphuric acid plant minimises sulphate discharges into water bodies. This will reduce the need to transport chemicals by rail and road.

"We choose the best professionals in the field to partner with us in building a modern bioproducts plant in Kemi. We expect our partners to commit to the project's objectives in terms of safety, schedule and quality. A-Perustus Oy acts in accordance with these principles and the agreed on-site casting work is a natural extension of our previous cooperation on the project.", Bioproduct Plant Project Manager Jari-Pekka Johansson Forest Fibre states.

In recent years, A-Perustus Oy has strengthened its role as a strong industrial player. This is the company's third contract for the Kemi bioproduct plant. In the past, the company has carried out industrial contracts at the Hanhikivi nuclear power plant site, SSAB, Outokumpu steel mill, Stora Enso, Kemira and several sawmills.

"Projects like this are exceptionally rare, so it's particularly nice to be involved in the construction phase. The current work in Kemi is going well, so the good experience was a nice wind in the sails for new projects.", Sales Director of A-Perustus Oy, Ari Ilvesluoto, glows.

Approximately 2200m3 of concrete and around 0.2 million kilos of steel will be used for the structures to be built. Work will start in December and the project will be completed in autumn 2022.

"My last project in Kemi was on the construction of the Kemi Energy biopower plant. It's good to be back on the pitch again. The contracts agreed with Metsä Fibre will nicely strengthen the order book for 2022.", project manager Niko Saarnio, says.
