Strong Expertise in BESS Engineering and Design
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are now cornerstone technologies for grid stability, security of supply, and energy efficiency. They support the growth of renewable energy and unlock new commercial potential for green power utilization. Particularly when integrated with substations and data centers, BESS acts as a vital part of critical infrastructure where constant power supply and fast response times are essential.
BESS units are not merely batteries, but comprehensive energy storage systems. Their functionality is built on careful design, high-precision construction, and an understanding of complex technical constraints. Anfra provides deep expertise to projects, especially in the following areas:
BESS solutions integrated with power substations
Battery storage for data centers, where requirements for operational reliability, fire safety, and redundancy are exceptionally high
Civil engineering, foundations, and infrastructure solutions for energy storage facilities
Logistics and site management for heavy and critical systems
Our own In-House Engineering Department is responsible for the geotechnical and structural design of energy storage parks. BESS facility structural engineering is always performed on a site-specific basis to ensure a result that is both safe and cost-effective. High-quality design work guarantees smooth project execution and a long service life.
BESS CONTRACTING

Anfra serves as a flexible and responsible main contractor or subcontractor in projects where schedules, safety, and technical quality are critical.
We have delivered demanding energy construction projects for industry leaders such as:
Fingrid, Enersense, Empower and Omexom.
This experience translates into seamless cooperation, proactive site planning, and the ability to operate efficiently even in the immediate vicinity of live substations and operational data center environments.
By choosing Anfra, you gain a partner who understands the role of BESS in ensuring the operational reliability of power grids and data centers. We build energy storage solutions that stand the test of time, meet the strictest requirements, and support our clients' business both today and in the future.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What does Anfra's BESS park contract include?
Anfra executes the physical infrastructure for BESS projects: civil works (clearing, leveling, drainage, structural layers), foundation elements for battery containers and transformers, cable trenching and ducting, concrete structures, substation and control buildings, fencing, as well as roads and traffic areas.
We also provide BESS equipment delivery (containers, cells, inverters, etc.) including electrical works according to the client's requirements.
The contract can be executed as a full turnkey solution or in parts, depending on the client’s needs.
Does Anfra act as a main contractor or a subcontractor in BESS projects?
Anfra adapts to the specific needs of your project. When a developer tenders infrastructure as a standalone package, we serve as an experienced main contractor. In turnkey projects led by equipment suppliers, we act as a reliable subcontractor responsible for the seamless execution of both infrastructure and electrical works.
We provide BESS systems with a sustainable, compliant foundation. Our expertise in Nordic ground conditions and local regulations makes Anfra an essential partner for international players in the region.
What size (MW / MWh) BESS projects do you execute?
We focus on industrial-scale energy storage facilities, typically starting from 30 MW up to the largest utility-scale installations. Our organization and equipment fleet are specifically optimized to meet the demanding infrastructure and foundation requirements of these high-capacity systems.
How long does BESS park infrastructure construction typically take?
The actual construction duration depends on the facility's scale, foundation conditions, and the season. As a general guideline: Smaller projects (5–30 MW): Civil and foundation works typically take 3–5 months. Larger projects (50+ MW): Construction usually spans 5–9 months. We always provide a precise, project-specific schedule during the planning phase. Our key competitive advantage is rapid site mobilization, ensuring your project gets underway without delay.
Why are geotechnical and structural engineering critical in BESS projects?
Battery containers typically weigh between 20 and 35 tons and require a perfectly level, non-settling foundation to ensure that technical connections and cooling systems function flawlessly. Anfra’s in-house engineering department ensures that both the soil bearing capacity (geotechnics) and the concrete structures are optimized specifically for the equipment type and the local terrain.
We deliver transformer foundations, oil containment bunds, cable conduit systems, and massive concrete slabs for batteries with millimeter precision, strictly adhering to the equipment supplier’s specifications and requirements.
How is fire safety considered during the construction phase?
Safety is the top priority in BESS projects. We strictly adhere to the required safety clearances in both design and execution, and we construct firewalls and other protective structures whenever necessary. We use non-combustible materials and ensure that the load-bearing capacity and accessibility of rescue routes meet even the most stringent requirements.
Our operations are governed by three ISO-certified management systems: ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety), and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management). In practice, this translates to: -Documented quality control at every stage of construction. -Systematic safety observations and comprehensive reporting. -Environmental impact management, including optimized waste management and efficient mass haul (earthmoving) planning.
At what stage of the project should we contact Anfra?
The earlier, the better. Ideally, we are involved as early as the pre-design phase. This allows geotechnical surveys and foundation design recommendations to be completed in time and fully integrated into the overall project plan. Early involvement reduces the risk of costly changes and improves the accuracy of cost estimations. For the client, this translates to a single point of responsibility, more transparent budgeting, and a seamless flow of information. Of course, we are also ready to step into projects at a later stage.
We are happy to assist with BESS equipment selection as well. Our full EPC delivery includes equipment procurement, testing, and commissioning.
